Meet Dr. Alissa Zingman, MD, MPH

Founder and CEO of P.R.I.S.M.

I am a board certified physician with nine years of experience and training in Orthopaedics and Preventive Medicine. I earned my medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, went on to academic Orthopaedic Surgery residency at University of Rochester and completed my residency in Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins. Prior to medical school, I was a professional dancer and pilates instructor, and I completed my undergraduate degree at Columbia University.

I believe that research is critical to moving our field forward. My research endeavors have included:
  • Injury Prevention – National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and International Association of Fire Fighters
  • Upper extremity surgery and rehabilitation - NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases
  • Rotator Cuff Injury, Hand Surgery and Neuropathy - University of Rochester
  • ACL Injury Prevention – University of Rochester Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Dance Injuries of the hip, knees, ankles, feet, and spine - Harkness Center for Dance Injuries at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases
  • Female Athlete Triad - Massachusetts General Hospital and MIT
  • Neuroradiology and Nervous System Development - National Institutes of Health Fogarty Research Fellow at Erasmus College in the Netherlands
I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome – Hypermobility Type. As a result, I have had five orthopaedic surgeries, have several herniated discs in my spine, and had to leave my orthopaedic surgery residency to pursue intensive rehabilitation for my spine and pelvis. Following this, I resumed medical training in Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins. I am board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

I know what it means to be a patient struggling to live my life to fullest with injury and illness. I know what it takes to prepare the body for surgery, to maximize recovery following surgery, and to avoid surgery as I did with my six herniated/injured discs. I was a professional dancer and pilates instructor in my teens and twenties, and I still utilize those skills today. I started PRISM to combine my experience as a patient and athlete, my orthopaedic knowledge, and my preventive medicine ethos to create a curated experience that will allow you to reach your goals. This is the practice I wish had been there for me.

In my free time I enjoy swimming, cooking, performing arts, home improvement projects, and spending time with my family. I still do ballet, but only in the pool 😊.
